How to Upgrade Buildings in Romestead

At a glance

Build a Carpenter’s Workshop in the correct town, open Construction, and select the target upgrade. If it is unavailable, check its quest unlock, materials, town access and the Carpenter’s assigned job.

Use Construction inside the correct town

Build a Carpenter’s Workshop, unlocked through The Giant Owl. With the workshop in town, open Construction, select the existing building and inspect its target upgrade and materials.

The workshop’s Workbench also provides construction access. Check that the bench is still inside the intended town boundary; placing a bench anywhere does not establish access to every town’s upgrades.

When Upgrade is missing or greyed out

Check Action
Blueprint Read the target level’s required quest or unlock
Workshop Make sure this town has the required Carpenter’s Workshop
Materials Check accessible Material Storage and the target upgrade cost
Worker Confirm a Carpenter is available for construction
Job mode Check that the Carpenter is constructing rather than doing another job

Read the actual disabled-button message where available. This checklist covers common prerequisites; it is not a universal error code for every building.

Workshop milestones are not every building’s requirements

Virgil’s Poem unlocks Carpenter’s Workshop Level 2. Profane Artifice unlocks Level 3. Other buildings can have their own unlocks, costs and profession caps.

Version 0.26.1 added a Carpenter Repair job, and 0.26.1_3 set Constructing as the default. Having a Carpenter citizen does not guarantee they are currently doing the construction job you need.

See Brick Oven if the upgrade is waiting for bricks, or moving buildings if the real problem is your town layout.
