Romestead Iron: ore, smelting and Quarry requirements

At a glance

Smelt volcanic Iron Ore in a burning upgraded Blacksmith furnace, or use a Volcano Quarry with a Miner at job level 5. The profession requirement is not a level-5 building.

Smelt Iron Ore in an upgraded furnace

Find Iron Ore in the Volcano, then bring it to a burning, upgraded Blacksmith furnace. Add fuel, make sure the furnace is burning, throw in the ore, and collect the Iron Bar.

The upgrade matters: an ordinary Blacksmith is not the same furnace. Use Blacksmith Level 2, whose upgrade is associated with Proving Your Worth. Check the upgrade’s unlock in your construction menu before spending materials.

Produce Iron Bars at a Quarry

A Quarry in the Volcano can produce Iron Bars with a Miner at job level 5. This is the worker’s profession level, not a level-5 Quarry building.

Condition What to check
Location The Quarry is in the Volcano biome
Worker A Miner is assigned and has reached job level 5
Capacity to level Quarry upgrades raise the worker’s maximum rank
Ability to work Food and efficiency are sufficient

The listed maximum Miner rank is 6 at Quarry Level 2 and 8 at Level 3. Raising the cap does not immediately level the worker.

If the furnace refuses fuel or produces nothing

Check the building upgrade, the fire and the input item. Iron Ore is the smelting input; Iron Bar is the result. Version 0.26.1 fixed upgraded Blacksmith furnaces sometimes refusing Coal, so an old video showing that bug is not a general rule against using Coal.

See Copper Bars for the earlier metal stage and the Volcano before making a long resource trip.
